Ferdinand Winder/Winter served as a private in Co K, 27th Regt of Indiana Vol Infantry, enlisting 24 Aug 1861 at Jasper, IN, and being discharged on certificate of disability on 27 Mar 1863. He was born in Germany, and was 36 years of age when enlisted, 5'6" tall, of dark complexion, with blue eyes and dark hair, and his occupation was farmer. His certificate of disability discharge states that he has been unfit for duty for the past 60 days. He was discharged from the Harpers Ferry Hospital, Harpers Ferry, W Va. His disability was given as "Right inguinal hernia, He says contracted at the Battle of Antietam. Broken down constitution. Also he claimed to have been wounded at the Battle of Cedar Mountain. By 1871 he was a resident of the National Soldiers' Home in Dayton, OH. In June of 1863 Ferdinand was living in Cincinnati, OH, and claimed to be 38 years of age, and a blacksmith by trade. His company was in action at Antietam, 17 Sep 1862, and then he must have been separated from his unit, as he was charged on 31 Dec 1862 with having deserted on 10 Dec 1862. This charge was later removed. He was admitted to the Harpers Ferry Hospital 12 Dec 1862, and from there received his disability discharge. No evidence of marriage or any children.
