The data is from notes of my husband's aunt (Elaine Rawlins Herne)

William Guthrie Winder was the 3rd son of Matthew Winder and Susan Spicer. He was born Feb. 1, 1823 in Thunderly Hall, Saffron, Walden,. Essex, England. His frst wife was Lucretia Abbott and she died in Europe prior to his coming to the U.S.(1861). This info was on widow's pension files. Widow said he told her this info.

In Elaine's notes, it is mentioned that there were 3 children born of the first marriage:

I have the marriage certificate of William G. Winder to Julia Augusta DeForest for March 20, 1865. There are certificates attesting to this info in the widow's pension files. There were 7 children born of this marriage:
Maude DeForest b March 6, 1866 (Hugh's grandmother - married to William Rawlins)
      Marmaduke Neville b January 26, 1868
      Bertha Augusta b June 11, 1870
      Guthrie Rider b June 6, 187(4 or 5) - one place says 4; another 5
      Blanche Edna
      George Phillips
      Ernest Archibald b Oct 11, 1886

Guthrie Rider was also a doctor. He died in 1901 of typhoid fever. He was married to Iona Hood Smith. In his obit, it is mentioned that his father WGW was a member of the ''Her Majesty's Twelth Royal Lancers.

We know that WGW served in the Crimean War. He later served as a surgeon in the Civil War. To my knowledge this was "under contract." This is 1 of reasons why he was not eligible for a pension. When laws were enacted in the late 1880's, his widow was eligible. I have copies of those papers obtained from NARA.

WGW died in Amityville, NY in July 1889. The London Times carried this info. I abstracted his death record from the register in Town of Babylon, Lindenhurst, LI last year.

Somewhere, I read in Elaine's notes (can't find the reference now) that Matthew and Susan Winder owned a pub. I must look further on this as there is a database on pubs in England.
Trust this will add to your info on Winder.
