First I'm going to tell you about me. Growing up I never knew anything about my father's side of the family. I never knew that there was anyone from his side of the family except for my grandmother who died when I was 5. I do have a couple of memories of her and a love for her that I didn't understand until well into my adult life. I grew up over hearing conversations that my Mother had with other people and that is what helped keep my grandmother in my mind. I remember always hearing that my father hated my grandmother and that I am very much like her, although no one ever explained in what ways. The only other thing I knew of this family is that we were some how related to the Dalton gang.
When I was 12, I met my grandmother's second husband, who was introduced as my grandfather. In my eyes he was my grandfather from that time on, even after I found out that he really wasn't. He died when I was 18. About 10 years ago I found out that my biological grandfather was still alive. I have tried to have contact with him, but he has failed to reply to my letters. I just recently found out that he now has cancer.
About 3 years ago my mother was getting ready to move to Virginia where all her family lives. Before she left, she gave me a book and told me that it was my grandmother's genealogy. She said that grandma had wanted someone to continue the work she had started. Mom was unable too because she was the one raising us kids, Dell (my father) was to busy trying to run from his responsibilities. Up until that day I knew nothing of the book. The only thing that the book had about the Winders family, was info about my grandfather & the name of his parents, nothing more because she didn't know anything else. In July of last year I was finally able to start the research and with in 1 month I had found my grandmother's nephew, who put me in touch with his father & Aunt. They are not of the Winders line. As of October of last year, with the help of a woman named Mary Singleton, I had found Bill Wallace, Dell's cousin, the Winders line. Bill also put me in touch with a real distant cousin name Mike Johnston who also has info on the Winders line.
Bill was able to shed some light on the so called stories I had heard. Rosa Dalton was in no way related to the Dalton gang and it did piss her off when people asked if she was. Mom had also told me that Marcus was still married to another woman when he married Rosa. His story was that she was dead. Many years later, Rosa discovered that the first wife was still alive, in a mental institution and that once a month Marcus had been going to visit her. From that point on, Rosa never talked to Marcus again. According to Bill, Rosa had caught Marcus with another woman and she left him. Rosa went to live with her daughter Pearl and her family, Pearl is Bill's mother. So Bill was raised with his grandmother in the house.
Dell would not give me any info to help me in my research and his father is no different. From what I've been able to find out there was some sort of falling out among the children of Marcus & Rosa. Dell Sr. seems to have held a grudge against his family for many years and until recently did not know if they were dead or alive. I had told Bill were Dell Sr. lived and Bill did make contact with him, so now he knows. I have found that there are grudges in a couple of my lines which seems to have been passed down through the generations.
As far as posting my stuff on your web site, that's fine with me. In fact I think that my grandmother would want the info to become availible to anyone researching our lines. Please keep in mind that most of what I have on the Winders & Dalton's came from Bill Wallace & Mike Johnston and they should get credit for it too. Also keep in mind that some of it is not totally confirmed yet, but it is a start.
