    • From "A History of Washington County, Maryland":
      Daniel J. Winter was educated in the comrnon schools of the county and at the Hagerstown High School. He has devoted much of his active life to rural pursuits. He was married January 16, 1866, to Harriet Berryhill Gehr, youngest daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth (Funk) Gehr. Their marriage took place in the old Gehr home stead in Smithsburg, in which they are still liv ing. Mr. Winter has been an active business man and has been connected with the official business of the town during most of his life. He is the owner of 20 acrw of land, which is planted with fine fruit trees. He is also the owner of a fine property in Smithsburg. Mr. Winter is now trustee of the Smithsburg school. He and his wife are members of the Episcopal Church of that place, in which he is warden. They have one daughter, Elizabeth Gehr Winter, who is a teacher in the primary department of the Smithsburg schools, a position she has held for eighteen years with ability. [1]
