Daniel E. Winder
Daniel E. Winder of Mercer Island died March 15, 2004, at Evergreen Hospital Medical Center in Kirkland. He was 79.
Mr. Winder was born April 10, 1924, in Cincinnati, the son of Bryce and Hazel Winder. He grew up in Cincinnati, where he graduated from high school, and served with the Navy during World War II. After the war, he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati. He moved in 1950 to Seattle, where he received his master's degree from the University of Washington. Mr. Winder worked for The Boeing Co. as an antenna and electrical engineer before his retirement in 1989. He owned three Radio
Shack stores from 1970 to 1982.
He was a member of the Masons and the Mountaineers and had climbed the six highest peaks in the state of Washington. He also was a member of The Friendship Force, the Corinthian Yacht Club and a founding member of the Crystal Mountain Ski Resort. In addition, he was a ham operator and belonged to the American Radio Relay League. Mr. Winder was a longtime supporter of the Seattle Opera, Seattle Symphony and the Mercer Island Beach Club.
He enjoyed sailing, hiking, skiing, and collecting international models of boats.
In addition to his wife, Pauline, survivors include sons Daniel Paul Winder of Kirkland and Douglas Allan Winder of Bremerton; sister Matilda Ripley of Madison, Wis.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mercer Island United Methodist Church, 7070 S.E. 24th St., Mercer Island. An inurnment service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, at Tahoma National Cemetery, 18600 S.E. 240th St., Kent.
